Azerbaijan to produce 7.5 tons of gold by late 2012

By the end of 2012 Azerbaijan expects to produce 7.5 tons of gold from Gedabek and Chovdar gold deposits.

Azerbaijani Ecology and Natural Resources Minister Huseyngulu Baghirov made this statement addressing a meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers on the results of the socio-economic development in the first quarter 2012 and the upcoming challenges, chaired by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.

Currently at Chovdar gold deposit, located in the Dashkesan regions preliminary work in connection with the start of operation and complete construction of the plant is underway, said Baghirov

"Gold production from gold deposits discovered in 2003 - 2005 allowed Azerbaijan to join the gold producing countries. In recent years, 4.5 tons of gold were produced," said the minister.

As a result of exploration work over the past two years in Goygol area a new Tyullalar gold deposit, which has estimated reserves of 80 tons and 290 tons of silver was discovered. In the Dashkesan region Goshgardah-Chanagchy gold mine was discovered, which reserves are estimated at 20 tons of gold, Baghirov said.

He noted that in Shamkir region for the first time in the country deposits of metals from the platinum group were discovered.
