Georgia studies Azerbaijan’s experience in solid waste management

As part of the European Neighbourhood and Partnership Instrument - Waste Management project, funded by the European Union, representatives of Georgia are on a visit to Azerbaijan, Tamiz Shahar said on Tuesday. The purpose of the visit is to get familiarized with the progress in the field of waste management in Baku, as well as the exchange of experiences between the two countries.

As part of the European Neighbourhood and Partnership Instrument - Waste Management project, funded by the European Union, representatives of Georgia are on a visit to Azerbaijan, Tamiz Shahar said on Tuesday. The purpose of the visit is to get familiarized with the progress in the field of waste management in Baku, as well as the exchange of experiences between the two countries.

In order to get familiarized with the activities of Tamiz Shahar, project coordinator of the European Neighbourhood and Partnership Instrument - Waste Management of Georgia, Irakli Legashvili, National Project Coordinator Alverdi Chankseliani and Director of the Georgian company to manage solid waste Nugzar Kevilishvili visited the village of Balakhani.

Tamiz Shahar Deputy Chairman of the Board Etibar Abbasov familiarized the guests with the work carried out on the territory of Balakhani landfill on disposal of municipal solid waste, Balakhani incinerator of solid waste and Balakhani plant for sorting solid waste.

Etibar Abbasov told Georgian specialists on the mechanism of Balakhani incinerator of solid waste, noting that the plant is the largest in the CIS plant of this type. Specialists were also given information on the Balakhani plant for sorting solid waste with an annual capacity of 200,000 tons. It was noted that the commissioning of the plant is planned in the middle of this year.

Coordinators of the European Neighbourhood and Partnership Instrument - Waste Management project were given extensive information on the work carried out in Balakhani landfill of disposal of solid waste. Etibar Abbasov told the guests that until 2014 it is planned to rehabilitate the landfill in accordance with international health standards.

Representatives of the project, in turn, spoke about the solid waste management in Georgia, praised the work carried out by Tamiz Shahar and noted that Azerbaijan's experience in the management of solid waste can be considered as a good example for countries in the region.
