Azerbaijan, Baku, June 7 / Trend H. Valiyev /

Today, Azerbaijan operates to expand its offshore infrastructure capabilities, Azerbaijani deputy transport minister Musa Panahov said at a ministerial meeting today.

In particular, work is underway to build a new commercial port 60 kilometres from Baku, which will be completed in 2015.

The capacity of the port at the first stage will reach more than eight million tons of cargo and more than 50,000 conventional units of large containers.

The capacity of the port will reach 25 million tons of cargo a year and about one million large containers depending on the growth of freight transportation.

The necessity of building a new port is connected with a new railway route using the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars project, involving Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey.

The work in this direction is planned to be completed by late 2012.
