Iranian state and privately-owned sectors produced 7394 tons of steel during the first five months of the current calendar year which began on March 20, the Mehr news agency quoted the deputy industry minister as saying.

Vajihollah Jafari added that the crude steel output amounted to 6.25 million tons during the aforementioned period of time showing an 8.8 per cent rise year on year.

Iran will no longer need to import steel products next year once the steel production projects currently underway come on stream, the deputy industry minister said on Wednesday.

On September 4, Industry, Mine, and Trade Minister Mehdi Ghazanfari said that a number of steel projects with a total output of 12 million tons, are being implemented, the IRNA news agency reported.

Iran will become one of the world's main steel exporters by March 2016, Ghazanfari said in May 2011.

He added that despite global economic sanctions, the country's steel output increased by five million tons during the past two years, reaching 17 million tons.
