Apple quarterly revenue jumps to $36 billion

Apple reported fourth-quarter revenue of almost 36 billion dollars Thursday, but its profit of 8.2 billion dollars missed Wall Street's estimates for the world's most valuable company, dpa reported.

Apple's profit amounted to 8.67 dollars per share, which is just below estimates of 8.75 dollars, a rare miss for the hard-charging company. The report comes despite awesome sales figures for the iPhone 5, which hit markets around the world last month and which contributed to sales of 26.9 million iPhones in the quarter.

The company also sold 14 million iPads, representing a 26-per-cent increase over the year-earlier period. It predicted revenue of 52 billion dollars for its first quarter, which includes the holiday season.

"We're very proud to end a fantastic fiscal year with record September quarter results," said Tim Cook, Apple's chief executive. "We're entering this holiday season with the best iPhone, iPad, Mac and iPod products ever, and we remain very confident in our new product pipeline."
