Mergen Shaliyev has been appointed as chairman of the board of the Turkmen Chamber of Commerce and Industry, an official Turkmen source said today.

Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov signed a corresponding decree.

Shaliyev has been elected as acting head of the Chamber since August. Earlier, he served as deputy minister of economy and development.

The chamber is the social and economic body uniting enterprises, organisations, entrepreneurs and their associations regardless of ownership, designed to express and protect their interests and to promote the development of the national economy, trade-economic, scientific and technical relations with other countries.

The Turkmen chamber represents the interests of its members and cooperates with the state and its bodies. It was established in 1994 to promote the development of the Turkmen economy and its integration into the world economic system, the establishment of a modern industrial, financial and commercial infrastructure, to create favourable conditions for business activity and to assist in establishing trade-economic, scientific and technical relations with foreign partners.
