Number of banks increases in Turkey in 2012

The number of banks increased to 49 in Turkey in 2012 compared to 46 in 2011, the Turkish Association of Banks said today.

Around 36 of the total number of banks are commercial, while 13 banks are investment.
Three of the 36 commercial banks are state-owned, 12 are private wholly backed with Turkish capital and 16 were created with foreign capital.

Around 400 bank branches were opened in 2012. This brought the number of bank branches in Turkey to 10,200.

Last year the number of employees in the Turkish banking sector increased by 2.6 per cent to 186,100. The greatest increase in the number of employees, by 1700 was observed in the banks created with foreign investments.
