Iran's average gasoline consumption stood at 63.6 million liters per day in the week to January 26, the SHANA News Agency reported.

The amount shows 8.4 percent increase compared to its preceding week.

Deputy Manager of National Iranian Oil Products Distribution Company (NIOPDC) Naser Sajjadi said on October 22 that Iran's average gasoline consumption stood at 64 million liters per day in the first seven months of the current Iranian calendar year, which began on March 20.

The amount is 5.7 percent more that the same period previous year.

Sajjadi had previously said that Iran's gasoline consumption increases by 5 percent each year.

He also said that considering the official reference rate of 12,260 rials to the US dollar, the real price of gasoline in Iran is 10,000 rials (about 82 U.S. cents).

Currently gasoline is sold at two prices: a 60-liter monthly allowance at 4000 rials (33 cents) per liter, and any amount above that at 7000 rials (57 cents) per liter.

Iranian Minister of Economy and Finance Affairs Shamseddin Hosseini said last week that the country is not going to increase the price of gasoline.

Some media had reported in the past days that the government plans to increase gasoline and diesel oil prices as part of the subsidy reform plan's phase two.

Hosseini referred to the mentioned reports as baseless rumors, adding that if the government ever planned to increase the prices, it would be announced officially.

Iran will start selling gasoline conforming to Euro-4 standard in 8 cities from February. The gasoline would be produced at Shazand oil refinery.

The move is a part of Iran's efforts to reduce air pollution. Motor vehicles account for 70 percent of air pollution in the Iranian capital city. Tehran says all carmakers would be obliged to manufacture cars meeting Euro-4 and Euro-5 standards.
