The Azerbaijani and Iranian customs bodies have reached an agreement on eliminating the problems with cars entering and leaving through customs checkpoints, the Azerbaijani State Customs Committee said on Saturday.

The customs and border issues were discussed at the meeting in Astara between head of Iran's Astara border city customs Jahangir Bakhshi and head of Astara Customs Department under the Azerbaijani State Customs Committee Hikmet Mammadov.

"The agreement was reached to eliminate the obstacles recently faced by trucks," a statement said.

According to the Azerbaijani State Customs Committee, as of 2012, the trade turnover between the countries amounted to $263.785 million, decreasing by 13.6 percent compared to 2011. The trade turnover is being reduced as a result of decreasing export operations by 39.7 percent.

The parties have also agreed to remove problems in the movement of physical entities, in particular, to ensure convenient and rapid passage of the sick and the elderly through checkpoints, as well as carrying hand luggage within certain rules.

The previous meeting of customs officials of the two countries took place at the Astara border checkpoint in late January.
