Azerbaijan, Baku, April 22 / Trend, S. Agayev /

Kuwait is interested in developing cooperation with Azerbaijan in several areas, including economy, tourism and humanitarian issues, Ambassador of Azerbaijan to Kuwait Tural Rzayev told Trend.

"At this stage, we are facing problems surrounding the implementation of several projects in the areas of economy, education and culture. The main attention is paid to the implementation of these projects," he said.

According to him, Kuwaiti companies are demonstrating interest in 'Baku White City' project and are planning to take part in it.

The Baku White City urban development project is being implemented under a decree of the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev on the approval of the "Plan of complex measures to improve the environmental situation in Azerbaijan in 2006-2010".

"Kuwait is one of the main petroleum producing nations. However, in contrast to Azerbaijan, the territory of the country is largely unsuitable for agriculture. Productive lands constitute only 1-2% of the total territory. In this regard, the volume of imports of agricultural products to the country is about 100 percent. Goods are imported to Kuwait, even from such distant countries like Australia, New Zealand, as well as from Latin America, although Azerbaijan is much closer," the diplomat said.

According to him, currently, agricultural products from Azerbaijani companies are appearing on Kuwaiti markets.

Speaking about the possibilities of cooperation in the field of investments, the diplomat said that both countries are investor states. However, this fact does not exclude the possibility of cooperation in the field of mutual investments; these issues are also being considered by the parties, he said.

"Along with this, there is also the possibility of joint investments in third countries. Azerbaijan and Kuwait are oil-exporting countries; but even in this sector, there is a potential for cooperation and the development of relations," he noted.

A good legal framework has been developed for efficient cooperation between the two countries in the economic sphere, the diplomat said. According to him, in March this year, Baku hosted its second meeting of the Azerbaijan-Kuwait intergovernmental commission for economic cooperation which resulted in the signing of five documents.
