Payment card market in Azerbaijan increases by 10 percent per year

The number of payment cards in Azerbaijan remained at the level of 5.27 million units in May as in April.

Their number increased by 9.8 percent compared to the same period of last year, the statistics report of Azerbaijani Central Bank (CBA) said on Thursday.

Total turnover on payment cards through ATMs and POS-terminals in May amounted to 848 million manat, and the total number of operations - 5.69 million units.

The number of debit card transactions totaled 4.851 million units worth 699 million manat.

Some 4.118 million transactions amounting to 643 million manat of the total number of debit card transactions were carried through the ATM, 524,000 transactions amounting to 41 million manat - through POS-terminals.

Some 838,000 transactions totaling 149 million manat were carried out through credit cards in May 2013.

Some 267,000 operations worth 65 million manat were carried out through the ATM, 378,000 operations at 42 million manat - through the POS terminals.

As of June 1, 2013, the country had 2,343 ATMs, including 1,324 ATMs in Baku, 1,019 - in other cities and regions. The total number increased by 127 units, or 5.37 percent per year.

As of June 1, 2013, the number of POS-terminals totaled 37,075 units, of which 33,269 account for Baku, and 3,806 for other cities and regions.

Their number decreased by 119 units, or by 0.32 percent since May 2012.

The official exchange rate is 0,7844 AZN/USD on July 5.
