Turkey to start production of seats for domestic airline fleet

Turkey will start mass production of seats for Turkish Airlines aircraft, chairman of the Board of Directors of Turkish Airlines (TYH) Hamdi Topchu said on Feb.18, Turkish Anadolu agency reported on Feb.18.

The domestic Turkish Seat Industry will produce seats for the airline's aircraft, according to Topchu.

At the first stage the company will produce seats for economy class cabins, head of the TYH board of directors said.

Almost all Turkish Airlines aircraft will be equipped with domestically produced seats by summer 2014, according to Topchu.

The Turkish Airlines fleet comprises 233 aircraft produced by Boeing and Airbus as of February 2014. The fleet's average age is 6.6 years.

Turkish Airlines was established on May 20, 1933, as the State Aviation Administration.

Currently, 49 percent of the shares are owned by the state and 51 percent by private owners. In December 2006 it was decided to include Turkish Airlines in the Star Alliance. From April 1, 2008, Turkish Airlines entered into an alliance as a full member.

Turkish Airlines carries out flights from 34 Turkish airports. Most of the company's international flights are carried out from Ataturk International Airport in Istanbul to 50 countries of a duration of no more than three hours. Turkish Airlines serves 108 destinations outside of Turkey to 70 countries.
