Iran, Afghanistan seek to boost economic ties

Iranian Minister of the Economic Affairs and Finance Ali Tayebnia and Afghanistan's Economy Minister Hazrat Omar Zakhilwal held a meeting in Washington, Iran's IRIB News Agency reported on April 12.

The meeting was held at the sidelines of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank meetings.

During the bilateral meeting, the two sides discussed possible ways to further boost cooperation.

Boosting trade ties and necessary measure to fight drug-trafficking were among the major discussed topics.

The two ministers also emphasized on suing free trade zones to boost the two countries' trade turnover.

Iran Customs Administration's latest report suggests that the country's total non-oil exports to foreign countries (excluding gas condensates) stood at $31.332 billion in the previous year, while the country's total imports amounted to $50.818 billion.

The figures mark annual trade balance of negative 19.486 billion dollars for Iran.
