Kazakhstan ratifies agreement on Dostyk waterworks facility construction

Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev signed the law on ratification of the intergovernmental agreement with China on cooperation and joint construction of the Dostyk waterworks facility, Kazakh presidency reported on April 21.

The Dostyk waterworks facility is planned to be constructed on the Khorgos River, 24.5 kilometers from Khorgos border crossing point. The parties will jointly finance the construction of the facility and each of them will hold equal share in its capital.

The agreement on the construction of waterworks on the Khorgos River was signed November 13, 2010 in Karaganda. The construction started in April 2011. Project costs $9.53 million.

Waterworks ensure fair and equitable division of transboundary river waters and it will address many water supply issues relating to border regions of Kazakhstan and China.
