Creating the planned Iran-Afghanistan-Tajikistan-Kyrgyzstan-China rail corridor is underway.

The railway which is 392-km long will connect Iran, Afghanistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and China, and will boost expansion of trade ties, increase exports and decrease transit costs among these countries and will facilitate transport of cargo and passenger in the region.

Iranian Railways Company's managing director Mohsen Pourseyed Aqaei said the Khaf-Sangan-Herat railway, which is part of the the planned corridor, is being built with a length of 191 kilometers, Iran's Fars news agency reported on April 23.

Some 77 kilometers of Khaf-Sangan-Herat is inside Iran and the rest is inside Afghanistan, he added.

Infrastructural operations have been completed in both countries, and more work is underway, he said.

In May 2012, former Iranian transport minister Ali Nikzad voiced Tehran's willingness to join a railway line which is due to connect China, Tajikistan and Afghanistan.
