Turkey to produce mobile phones protected from wiretapping

The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK) intends to start producing mobile phones that are protected from wiretapping, Turkish Minister of Science, Industry and Technology Fikri Isik was quoted Oct. 27 by Al Jazeera Turk TV channel as saying.

"Turkey also intends to establish production and export smartphones protected from wiretapping to neighboring countries.

The minister did not mention the specific date of the production and the cost of the project.

There are 67.9 million mobile phones registered in the country, the Turkish Information and Communication Technologies Authority said.

The population of Turkey is 76.667 million, according to official statistics.

Mobile network penetration in Turkey is 99 percent. Currently 1,800 settlements are not provided with the mobile and fiber-optic communication. It is explained by difficult location of those settlements.

There are 47 mobile operators officially registered in Turkey, three of which are functioning - Avea, Turkcell and Vodafone.

Turkcell has 52.4 percent of users, Vodafone - 27.9 percent, and Avea - 19.7 percent.
