By Daniyar Mukhtarov - Trend:

Kazakh National Atomic Company Kazatomprom and more than four large international companies are negotiating over the nuclear power plant construction project on its territory, Chairman of the Board of Kazakh National Atomic Company Kazatomprom Nurlan Kapparov told Trend.

"We and more than four large companies are negotiating over the construction of a nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan," Kapparov said. "The negotiations concern the security issues, the project economy, its cost and financing schemes ... All options are open."

He said that the negotiations are being held with French AREVA, Japanese Mitsubishi, Toshiba, Rosatom and Korean companies.

The talks about the need to build a nuclear power plant in Kazakhstan have been held for a long time - more than 10 years.

"I have a feeling that everything will go really fast now," said the head of Kazatomprom. "Now we are at the zero stage for NPP: negotiations are underway, it is necessary to form a team... We are at the beginning of the first year of the project from idea to realization."

He confirmed the information previously circulated by a number of media that the issue on the construction of two nuclear power plants is discussed: in the cities of Kurchatov and Balkhash.

"We will implement the project with Rosatom in Kurchatov and there is an open competition in Balkhash," said Kapparov.

He said that Kazakhstan does not exclude the use of the POS (probability of survival)-300 reactor in Kurchatov, which was offered to him by the Russian side.

"POS-300 - it will be one of the technologies...," said the head of Kazatomprom. "We do not rule out POS-300 for now, although it may be POS-600 or even POS-1000... Everything will be resolved through negotiations and calculations, the main thing is that we do it together with Rosatom and it is important."

Earlier, Kazakh Energy Ministry told Trend that the country plans to build a nuclear power plant in at least 12 years.

First of all, feasibility studies of the project should be developed and it will take about 2 years, according to the ministry. Then the construction work will require at least 10 years.

"The International Atomic Energy Agency estimates that the construction of a nuclear power plant will take 10 - 12 years," said the ministry, adding that the experience in the construction of power plants abroad will also be considered.

"The necessary work includes choosing the site, design, construction work, production and installation of equipment and commissioning of the plant. Moreover, it is necessary to carry out work on the development of the infrastructure, training and creation of regulatory and technical framework." Edited by CN
