By Huseyn Veliyev - Trend:

Sumgait Technologies Park (STP) launched the production of fiber optic cables, a specialist of the STP department of public relations and business development Mehman Isgandarov told Trend Dec.24.

He said that the launch of optical cables production on the basis of STP will make it possible to fully cover the needs of the home market and make them more accessible to end users, which is also important.

"Currently, STP already negotiates with connection operators of Azerbaijan on the issue of cooperation, which provides for the delivery of the product to them for expansion of the optic communication lines," said Isgandarov. "In terms of price, the local product can cost customers about 30 percent cheaper than its foreign counterparts."

He said that European technologies and equipment are used for the production of the optical, as well as of all other types of cables. Sumgait Technologies Park is the only manufacturer of this product in the country, according to Isgandarov.

He went on to add that STP is also interested in cooperation with the ministry of communications and high technologies of Azerbaijan, which is the initiator of the broadband Internet development project in the country.

"Due to the fact that the production of fiber has started not so long ago, cable product (fiber optic, coaxial and LAN cables) accounts for 15 percent of the total production volume," said Isgandarov. "The annual production capacity of the enterprise is about 20,000 metric tons."

It is reported that at present, about 10,000 kinds of cables are produced on the basis of Sumgait Technologies Park.

"At the beginning of 2015, production of 500-kv cables will be launched," said Isgandarov. "We have already built a tower of 130 meters for this purpose. The launch of their production will allow Azerbaijan to take the leadership in the region and in the CIS in general, because their production has not yet been established in the countries of the former Soviet Union. Currently, production of 200-kv cables has already started in the test mode. The next stage involves the establishment of production of 330-kv cables, and then the 500-kv ones."
