Azerbaijan rented orbital position for the second satellite of the country

Baku, Azerbaijan, Jan.8

By Huseyn Veliyev - Trend:

Azerbaijan rented orbital position for the second satellite of the country, a source on the telecommunications market of Azerbaijan told Trend Jan.8.

The new orbital position was leased from one of the foreign countries, as well as the orbital position of 46 degrees east longitude, leased from Malaysia for the first satellite Azerspace-1, according to the source.

A long-term lease of the orbital position of foreign countries was decided due to the problems in the issue of coordination of orbital positions belonging to Azerbaijan.

The matter rests in the fact that the country, which plans to establish a satellite system, publishes the main characteristics of satellite systems beforehand and conducts their agreement with all the owners of the neighboring satellite communication systems, whose interests are affected (with the support of the International Telecommunication Union - ITU).

The only legitimate basis for consolidation of international law to occupy the orbital position is the launch of satellite after the end of international coordination of the neighboring satellite communication systems parameters with the systems of other countries and its notification in the register of the ITU.

If the satellite doesn't start functioning in terms, established by the procedures, the unrealized orbital-frequency resource is canceled by the ITU and enters into a common pool of resources for coordination in the interests of other satellite systems asserted in this position.

The information on the orbital position, where Azerspace-2 will be placed, and the country which gives the position for rent, will be released in the near future, according to the source.

Earlier, the Ministry of Communications and High Technologies of Azerbaijan held talks with ITU on obtaining the orbital position for the second telecommunications satellite of the country.

A position of 62 degrees east longitude was considered for the second satellite system Azerspace-2 (Azersat C), application for which was previously submitted by Azerbaijan.

Azerspace-2 satellite launch is scheduled for 2017.

The first Azerbaijani Azerspace / Africasat-1a telecommunication satellite was launched on February 8, 2013. The satellite is located at the orbital position of 46 degrees east longitude.

Satellite operator of Azerbaijan renders services of digital television, data transmission, creation of VSAT multiservice networks and provision of government communication via the use of Azerspace / Africasat-1a telecommunication satellite. The service area of Azerspace / Africasat-1a includes the countries of Europe, the Caucasus, Central Asia, Middle East and Africa.
