German development bank to fund creation of biosphere reserve in Azerbaijan

Germany's development bank, KfW, expects to sign this year an agreement with the Azerbaijani government to allocate a grant of 4 million euros for drafting and realization of the 'Zagatala- Balakan Biosphere Reserve' project, the bank's office in Baku told Trend Feb. 20.

"The German side presented all the necessary documents to Azerbaijan for the conclusion of the grant agreement. At present, it is being agreed with the ministries of finance, economy and industry," the KfW Baku office said.

The total area of the 'Zagatala-Balakan Biosphere Reserve' project will be 234,240 hectares. It will cover the districts of Zagatala (134,800 hectares) and Balakan (99,400 hectares) located in the northwest part of Azerbaijan on the border with Georgia and Dagestan.

The project's implementation period is three years, excluding the preparatory phase.
