Azerbaijan's potential in the sphere of cargo transportation to Europe via the Trans-Caspian international transport route (TCITR) is 54 million tons per year, Igbal Huseynov, deputy head of Azerbaijan Railways JSC said.
He made the remarks during the international forum "Bridging Europe and Asia: a new look at the formation of transcontinental routes" in Odessa, Ukraine.
All participants of TCITR need the commissioning of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway, he noted.
Cargo transportation across two seas on two ferries increases the cost of logistics, Huseynov, added.
In a day or two, the first train sent by TCITR will arrive in Istanbul - the end point of the route, Levan Sulaberidze, president of Trans Caucasus Terminals (a subsidiary of Georgian Railway) said.
The second container train is expected to arrive from China to Baku in coming days.
