Iran has exported over 13,000 tons of shrimp worth $56.7 million over the last Iranian calendar year (ended March 20), ISNA news agency reported.

While the volume of shrimp exports increased by 10.1 percent year on year, shrimp farming in Iran suffered a lowdown due to a virus infection in shrimp.

The country was expected to export over 15,000 tons of shrimp but the infection caused the failure in plans to hit the target.

According to the report, Iran's shrimp was exported to various countries including the US and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Vietnam and the UAE who purchased about 11,000 tons from the Islamic Republic were the main importers of Iran's shrimp.

Iran plans to export at least 80,000 tons of various types of seafood in the current Iranian calendar year.

Back in 2014, Iran's fishery exports surpassed 52,000 tons with a value of $173 million.

The Iranian Fishery exports stood at $200 million in the year ended in March 2012.

Iran harvested 663,000 tons of sea foods during the one-year period to March 2011, and 735,000 tons in the year ending in March 2012. About 200,000 individuals are currently working in Iran's fisheries.
