Cargo traffic decreases in Azerbaijan

Some 182.6 million tons of cargo were transported by Azerbaijan’s transportation sector in January-October 2016, that is, 0.8 percent less than in the same period of 2015, the Azerbaijani State Statistics Committee said in a report as of January-October 2016.

Non-oil cargo traffic increased by 2.3 percent and amounted to 135.7 million tons for the year.

According to the report, around 82.2 percent of the total cargo transported in January-October 2016 accounted for private sector.

Some 63.6 percent of the total cargo was transported by vehicles, 26.9 percent – by pipelines, 6.9 percent – by trains, 2.5 percent – by ships, and 0.1 percent – by planes.

Around 1.58 billion passengers were transported in January-October 2016, that is, 1.9 percent more than in the same period of 2015. Some 88.5 percent of passengers were transported by vehicles, 11.2 percent by subway, the rest part – by other types of transport.

Some 12.5 million tons of cargo were transported by trains in January-October 2016, which is 11.9 percent less than in January-October 2015, the report said.

On average, the daily number of loaded railcars was 440, while the number of unloaded railcars was 421.

Average daily load of carriages in the northern direction of the railway amounted to 17,900 tons, western – 5,000 tons, southern – 1,700 tons.

Some 4.58 million tons of cargo were transported by ships in January-October 2016, or 18.5 percent less than in the same period of 2015. Around 42.3 percent of the transported cargo accounted for oil cargo.

The volume of cargo handled at the Azerbaijani ports was 7.46 million tons in January-October 2016.

According to the report, around 116.3 million tons of cargo were transported by vehicles in January-October 2016, which exceeds the same period of 2015 by 2.8 percent.

Around 1.4 billion people were transported by vehicles in January-October 2016 (an increase by 2.5 percent as compared to January-October 2015), 96.1 percent of these passengers were transported by buses and 3.9 percent by vehicles.

Passenger transportation by metro was 177.5 million people in January-October 2016, that is, 2.9 percent less than in January-October 2015.

Moreover, some 1.71 million passengers were transported by planes in January-October 2016, or 7.6 percent more than in the same period of 2015. Some 0.2 percent of air traffic accounted for private sector during the reporting period, the report said.
