The first AZ8A freight electric locomotive manufactured by France’s Alstom company at the production site of the Elektrovoz Kurastyru Zauyty (EKZ) joint venture in Kazakhstan will be delivered to Azerbaijan in September 2017, Elshan Zeynalov, Alstom Transport managing director for Azerbaijan, said.

He made the remarks at the EU-Azerbaijan Business Forum in Baku June 9.

Alstom has been operating in Azerbaijan for 20 years and the parties have become reliable partners during this time, he noted.

“The schedule of supplying 50 electric locomotives Alstom is building for Azerbaijan has already been agreed with Azerbaijan Railways CJSC,” Zeynalov said. “Starting from January 2018, Alstom will be supplying two electric locomotives to Azerbaijan per month. We are confident that these electric locomotives will become an additional impetus for the development of Azerbaijan’s transport projects.”

The contract for delivery of 50 locomotives, including 40 freight and 10 passenger locomotives, for Azerbaijan Railways CJSC was signed in 2014, while the final agreement was inked in May 2015.

The AZ8A electric locomotives with asynchronous traction drive are built especially for Azerbaijan and will be one of the most powerful locomotives in the world.
