Work in Sabuncubeli Tunnel nearing completion: Turkish ministry

Work in the Sabuncubeli Tunnel, which will significantly reduce the journey between the cities of Izmir and Manisa in western Turkey, is nearing completion, Turkish Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications told Trend.

The project costs 150 million Turkish liras (nearly $44 million on Sept. 8), according to the ministry.

“Almost 97 percent of the Sabuncubeli tunnel’s construction has been completed. The length of the tunnel will be 6.4 kilometers.”

The tunnel’s construction started in 2011, the ministry said, adding that its commissioning is expected to take place in the first half of 2018.

Presently, Turkey has 39 road and three railway tunnels.
