Rize-Artvin Airport, which is being built in drained areas in the northeast of Turkey, will be commissioned in October 2020, a source in the country’s Ministry of Transport, Maritime Affairs and Communications told Trend Oct. 2.

The construction of the airport began in April this year, and the work is currently underway to drain the coastal area in the Black Sea, where the future airport will be located, according to the source.

The ministry noted that runways with a length of 3,000 meters and a width of 45 meters will be built within the framework of the airport construction.

The Rize-Artvin Airport will be able to receive 3 million people annually, the source said.

“An air terminal with an area of 25,000 square meters will also be built here,” the ministry said.

The total cost of the project exceeds 1.087 billion liras ($303.979 million as of Oct. 2).

Along with the construction of the Rize-Artvin Airport, a third airport in Istanbul is also being built.

Thus, the total number of airports in Turkey will reach 57. The first airport in Turkey was built in 1912 and was used for military purposes.

For the first time the Istanbul airport was opened for international flights in 1953 and in 1985 it was renamed in honor of founder of the Turkish Republic Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.
