By Ali Mustafayev – Trend:

Kazakhstan plans to construct 53 renewable energy (RE) facilities worth 1 trillion tenge ($2.9 billion), the Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan said in a message.

The plans include construction of 22 wind power plants with 957 MW capacity, 18 solar power plants with 750 MW capacity and 13 hydroelectric power stations with 268 MW capacity.

The concept of Kazakhstan’s transition to "green" economy aims to increase the share of renewable energy in the country’s total amount of electricity production to 3 percent in 2020, to 10 percent in 2030, according to the Ministry.

Total share of the alternative energy sources in Kazakhstan is also expected to reach 50 percent by 2050.

Several agreements in the field of renewable energy development were reached within the EXPO-2017 in Kazakhstan, including memorandum of understanding and support, signed between the European Bank of Reconstruction and Development and Kazakh Ministry of Energy on the allocation of $200 million for the development of renewable energy projects in the country.

The country also intends to implement projects in the field of wind energy with ENI and General Electric companies. The Saudi company ACWA Power is already involved in Kazakhstan’s RE projects.
