In 2017, some 1.5 million tons of cargo was transported by inland waterways of Kazakhstan, the Ministry of Investment and Development of Kazakhstan reported.

The figure is more by 16 percent compared to the indicator of 2016. The volume of transportation with Russia amounted to 350,000 tons.

The increase in the volume of cargo transportation was achieved largely thanks to the timely implementation of measures to create conditions for safe navigation, the ministry notes.

In Kazakhstan, river transportation is carried out on the sections of the Irtysh, Ural-Caspian and Ili-Balkhash water basins.

Transportation of passengers and cargoes is carried out by private shipowners, who have about 530 vessels for various purposes.

The main cargoes transported by river transport are sand and gravel mixture, crushed stone, construction materials, salt, timber, oversized cargo and fish.
