By Rufiz Hafizoglu – Trend:

The construction of additional branches of the Marmaray tunnel will be completed in late 2018, the Turkish Ministry of Transport, Maritime and Communications told Trend Jan. 11.

The ministry said that the Marmaray tunnel will be extended in two directions – to the Halkali and Gebze districts of Istanbul.

According to the ministry, it is expected that the extension of Marmaray tunnel would end in mid-2018, but additional work had to be done due to technical problems related to the need to strengthen the ground.

The ministry noted that the extension of the Marmaray tunnel in the two directions will contribute to the development of Turkey’s railway sector.

The Marmaray railway tunnel, which connects the eastern and European parts of Turkey, was commissioned in autumn 2013.

The tunnel’s length is 13.6 kilometers.
