Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov has sent heartfelt congratulations to Xi Jinping on behalf of his people and Turkmen government on his re-election as the Chairman of the People's Republic of China, the Turkmen government said.

"I am deeply convinced that under your wise and visionary leadership, China will achieve even greater success, and our intergovernmental relations will reach a qualitatively new level," the Turkmen president stressed.

According to Berdimuhamedov, Turkmenistan attaches great importance to further development of the bilateral cooperation, which is traditionally based on the principles of equality, mutual respect and mutual observance of interests.

China has been Turkmenistan’s biggest trade partner over the past five years.

As of 2016, about 40 enterprises operated in Turkmenistan with the participation of Chinese capital and nearly 70 investment projects worth more than $4 billion and 2.3 billion Chinese yuans were registered. Companies from China are represented in the oil and gas, telecommunications spheres, transportation, agriculture, textile, chemical and food industries, healthcare and construction.

Chinese companies have implemented a number of major projects in the gas sector. In particular, CNPC takes part in the development of the Bagtiyarlyk contract area and development of the giant gas field Galkynysh. Since 2009, China has been importing Turkmen gas with the prospect of increasing up to 65 billion cubic meters of fuel a year.
