Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov has instructed heads of regional administrations to keep under control implementation of the full-scale contractual obligations on production of silkworm cocoons, the Neutral Turkmenistan newspaper reported on May 30.
Sericulture can become one of the key industries for the local agro-industry. Sericulture is developed throughout the country, excluding the western regions. Meanwhile, more than half of the cocoon harvest accounts for the Lebap region.
Turkmenistan is the native land of silk homespun fabric called "keteni". Turkmens have been successfully practicing sericulture for many centuries.
