By Ali Mustafayev – Trend:

Kazakhstan launched the construction of the Big Almaty Ring Road (BARR), Kazakh media outlets reported.

The project envisages construction of a 66-km long bypass road around Almaty with six lanes.

Intensity of traffic on the BARR is estimated at more than 38,000 cars per day. Along with the construction of the highway, the project provides for the construction of new bridges, traffic interchanges and flyovers. The construction period is 2018-2021.

BARR is expected to reduce the traffic flow within Almaty, reducing the number of transit vehicles, and improving the ecological environment of the city.

BARR is Kazakhstan’s largest transport infrastructure project, being implemented through the mechanism of public-private partnership. The project’s cost is estimated at 180 billion tenge.

The ceremony of the start of BARR projects was attended by the first deputy prime minister of Kazakhstan, Askar Mamin, the head of the Almaty region Amandyk Batalov, the deputy mayor of Almaty Murat Daribayev, the Minister for Investments and Development of Kazakhstan Zhenis Kasymbek, as well as representatives of the leadership of the Turkish-South Korean consortium, involved in the project.
