The head of Cotton Research Institute of Iran said the country could reach self-sufficiency in cotton production in three years.

“With the government’s support for cotton cultivation, the country could reach self-sufficiency in the production of the major and strategic product within three years,” Qorban Ali Roshani said on June 17, IRIB news website reported.

Noting that the country’s cotton production has seen a declining trend in the past 14 years, he said the implementation of the “Save Cotton” project could also help Iran become self-sufficient in the production of the crop.

Some 180,000 tons of cotton bolls were produced in Iran in the last fiscal year (March 2017-18), of which close to 60,000 tons of carded and refined cotton were made, Iranian media reported.

The production volume meets 47% of domestic demand and It is estimated that about 200,000 tons of cotton bolls will be produced in the current fiscal year.

Since 1979, Iran has been following a self-sufficiency and food production drive but a series of challenges, including inefficient land governance and nagging drought, have hampered the effort.
