Azerbaijan sees rise in volume of payment card transactions

The turnover of payment card transactions carried out via ATMs and POS-terminals amounted to about 1.48 billion manats in Azerbaijan in May 2018, which is by 20.3 percent more than in May 2017, said the report of the Central Bank of Azerbaijan (CBA).

According to the report, the total number of payment card transactions reached 9.9 million in May 2018 (18.7 percent-growth compared to May 2017).

The number of debit card transactions [both inside and outside the country] reached 8.7 million totalling 1.31 billion manats during the reporting period. Meanwhile, 5.38 million debit card transactions worth 1.05 billion manats were carried out via ATMs, and 889,000 transactions worth 118 million manats via POS-terminals.

Customers of banks carried out about 1.21 million transactions on credit cards [both inside and outside the country] in May2018 for a total of 170 million manats (363,000 operations for 70 million manats - via ATMs inside the country, 318,000 transactions for 34 million manats - POS-terminals inside the country).

The number of payment cards rose by 9.2 percent to 6.07 million in May2018 as compared to the same period of 2017.

Bulk of cards - about 5.29 million - is debit cards, including 2.51 million - social cards, 1.88 million - salary cards, and 0.9 million - others. The number of credit cards during the period hit 784,000.

As of June 1, 2018, 2,471 ATMs operated in the country, 1,332 of which are located in Baku and 1,139 – in other cities and districts of the country. The total number of ATMs has decreased by 5 units or 0.2 percent for the year.

As of late May 2018, the number of POS-terminals amounted to 65,440 in the country, 37,053 of which are installed in Baku and 28,387 in other cities and districts of the country.

The number of POS-terminals has decreased by 4,734 or 6.7 percent in Azerbaijan for the year.
