Kazakhstan to restore over 15,000 hectares of irrigated land

In Aktobe region of Kazakhstan it is planned to restore 15,600 hectares of irrigated land worth more than 7 billion tenge, Director of Kazvodkhoz Aktobe Branch Bekzat Nametov told Kazakh media.

He noted that the project, implemented using an EBRD loan, will allow the use of best international practices in the effective organization of project implementation.

"As a result, the annual gross productivity of irrigated lands will increase to 35 billion tenge per year in the region, including through the restoration and improvement of water supply in unused lands," he said.

Also, the restoration and preservation of irrigated agriculture will provide up to 8,000 jobs for rural residents, according to Nametov.

To date, 21,500 hectares of irrigated land have been developed in the Aktobe region. In addition, 10 reservoirs will be built there, and their commissioning will increase the area of irrigated land twice and bring it up to 80,000 hectares.
