Annually, two million tons of salt are extracted from the mines in Iran's Semnan province, Mohammad Foruhar, deputy head of Semnan Province Industry, Mine and Trade Organization, said, Trend reports referring to Iranian media.
Western parts of Semnan province are rich in salt deposits and have 33 salt mines, Foruhar said.
Semnan province ranks first in Iran in terms of gypsum, salt and selestine production, Foruhar noted, adding that the province provides about 50 percent of Iran's demand for salt.
Approximately 592 mines operate in Semnan province and they employ over 3,600 people, he added.
Semnan has rich and various deposits, Foruhar said, adding that the province produces over 20 million tons of mining materials per year.
