As part of the rehabilitation program for the energy system of Azerbaijan, Azerbaijani thermal power plant (TPP), which is the largest TPP in the South Caucasus, will be fully restored within three years, Azerenergy told Trend.

According to the company, from October 3 to December 26, 2018, complex reconstruction work was carried out at power unit No. 6 of the Azerbaijan TPP.

"Turbines, generators, relay protection systems, workshops, substations, overhead lines, emergency control systems will be restored, fire safety systems will be installed, an administrative building and control center will be constructed," Azerenergy said.

Moreover, a new bridge and a road through the Upper Karabakh Canal will also be built, underground water supply systems will be restored and other large-scale work will be performed.

Azerenergy noted that, within the program, 230 megawatts of electricity were restored as a result of measures taken at the Janub, Shimal and Baku power stations over the past three months

Furthermore, 20 megawatts of electricity was restored at the Shimal-1 power station as a result of repairs.

The construction of the Shimal-2 power station has been accelerated in recent months and is nearing completion.

“In the nearest months, “Shimal-2” power station will put into work and thus, half of the Baku’s and Absheron Peninsula needs will be provided by “Shimal-1” and “Shimal-2” power stations,” company emphasized.

Azerenergy has signed a contract with Finnish company Wartsila, in order to purchase the necessary spare parts to increase the generation capacity and ensure stable operation at the Baku, Astara, Sheki, Khachmaz, Shahdag and Sangachal modular power plants.

“Construction of the “Astara-1”, “Oguz-1”, “Oguz-2” and “Oguz-3” hydropower stations is being completed. At the same time, reconstruction began at the “Nizami”, “Khirdalan”, “Mushfig”, and “Hovsan "," Zabrat "," Ahmedly "," Dubendi "," Mashtaga "and" Absheron” substations," said the company.

The rehabilitation work also includes high-voltage overhead power lines.

"Significant attention deserves a development of power line that will increase the technical possibilities for the energy exchange between Azerbaijan and Iran, and the reconstruction of the Gardabani line continues to increase the reliability of electricity exchange with Georgia,” the company said.

Apart from this, modernization of the emergency protection automation system is being conducted on the basis of modern microprocessor technologies. The new system will initially cover 30 power plants and 150 substations.

There are more than 30 power plants on the balance of “Azerenergy”. The total power generation capacity of these stations exceeds 6 thousand megawatts, which makes it possible to generate about 24 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually.
