By Huseyn Veliyev - Trend:

The possibility of growing asparagus in greenhouses is currently being studied in Azerbaijan, the Director of the Agrarian Research Center under the Ministry of Agriculture of Azerbaijan Parviz Hajiyev told Trend on Jan. 18.

The center has conducted research and studied methods for the effective cultivation of non-traditional types of agricultural products for Azerbaijan, Hajiyev said.

"There are a number of interesting products that can be grown in greenhouses. Asparagus is one of them. This product is now in great demand in the market. The market value of one kilogram of asparagus today is about 10 manats. It is possible that the deployment of its mass production in the country will allow the market to offer the product at the most favorable price for consumers," he said.

Hajiyev noted that in the near future, the proposals prepared by the center will be presented to entrepreneurs of greenhouse industry.

"We study those products that could be cost-effective for business. No less interesting are the new varieties of cherries, which can also be grown in greenhouses. This is a fairly fast-growing species that will allow entrepreneurs to get the harvest not in late May, but in April and export them to the markets of neighboring countries much earlier," Hajiyev added.
