In the current Iranian year (started March 21, 2018), in Mahabad county of Iran's West Azerbaijan province, 90,000 tons of sugar beet have been harvested and handed over to sugar factories, said Jafar Alizadeh, a department head at Mahabad Agricultural Jihad Organization, Trend reports via IRNA.

Some 65,000 tons of Mahabad's sugar beet harvest were delivered to Urmia sugar factory, 18,000 tons to Miandoab sugar factory and 2,000 tons to Khoy sugar factory, Alizadeh said.

He added that this year, over 50 tons of sugar beet were harvested from every hectare, which means a five-ton of increase per each hectare.

The sugar factories, so far, have paid for only 50 percent of the sugar beet bought from the county's producers, Alizadeh said, adding that one kilogram of sugar beet was bought at 31.2 rials (roughly $0.74).

Harvest of sugar beet in Iran's West Azerbaijan province started on Sept. 6, 2018 and ended on Dec. 21, 2018.

Mahabad is located in the south of the West Azerbaijan province and has 80,000 hectares of fields and orchards.
