By Leman Zeynalova – Trend:

The construction process of Georgia’s Anaklia Deep Sea Port continues as scheduled, Anaklia Development Consortium (ADC) told Trend.

“Recently, by the end of 2018, 1st stage of large-scale maritime construction works of the port was completed. The works included dredging and reclamation of 5.0 million cubic meters of sand from the sea and it was carried out by one of the most advanced and technically capable dredging vessels ever built (The Athena). The works were accomplished by one of the world’s leading marine engineering contractors, Van Oord,” said the consortium.

Right now, as the port area is prepared for the next stage of construction and is in the process of soil improvement and consolidation (the process will last until the end of May 2019), in parallel Anaklia Development Consortium is working to finalize 2 important tenders: (1) to identify the main construction company of the port; (2) to identify the equipment provider, said CDC, adding that both international tenders.

“In general, during 2019-2020 the following works are planned on the port area: dredging of the port’s maritime area up to 16 meters deep, construction of a breakwater, construction of a quay wall with multifunctional capabilities, 40 hectares of paved container and intermodal yard, customs building and other supportive buildings.”

The consortium said that the port infrastructure built during the 1st Phase will enable Georgia to dock 10,000 TEU Panamax and Post-Panamax vessels, which can’t be received by other seaports in Georgia. “At the time of its opening and after Phase I is put into operation in 2021, Anaklia Deep Sea Port will have infrastructure throughput capacity of up to 1 million TEU of containers and 1.5 million tons of dry bulk.”

Anaklia Development Consortium (ADC) is an international consortium which combines international and local companies with specialized experiences in their respective fields. It is working with the government of Georgia to execute and fulfill Anaklia Deep Sea Port project.
