Uzbekistan intends to bring the processing of solid household waste up to 60 percent by 2028, Trend reports with reference to the presidential decree.

President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev approved the Strategy for the Management of Solid Household Waste (MSHW) in Uzbekistan for 2019-2028. The strategy envisions an effective system for processing solid household waste by creating necessary infrastructure, improvement of prices and optimization of sanitation tariffs, reduction of the amount of garbage sent for landfill, and use of waste as alternative fuel.

The strategy will be implemented in two stages. The first stage (2019-2021) will include the improvement of the legislative base and mechanisms of economic regulation in the field of solid waste management, development of the material and technical base and infrastructure of sanitation to ensure effective organization of services for the collection and removal of solid waste, strengthening payment discipline, creating methodological and informational support for the development of environmental education in MSHW management areas.

The second stage (2022-2028) will include the development of investments aimed at the evolvement of infrastructure for the separate collection of solid waste, landfill optimization, construction of transshipment stations and waste treatment facilities, improvement of clusters for integrated waste management, and development of their capacity for processing solid waste.

At the end of the second stage, Uzbekistan intends to reach 100% coverage of the population with services for the collection and removal of solid household waste and ensure the processing of at least 60 percent of the generated solid household waste. In addition, it is planned to increase the volume of processing of specific solid household waste (mercury-containing waste, tires, batteries, waste oils and packaging waste) up to 25 percent, reducing the amount of solid household waste sent for landfill up to 60 percent.

The State Committee on Ecology and Environmental Protection was entrusted with the task of enhancing the ecological culture of the population, paying particular attention to waste management, rational use of natural resources, and prevention and remedy of environmental damages.
