The brand names and appellation of origin of Georgian wines, cheese and mineral waters in Switzerland will now be protected by a Georgain-Swiss agreement, said Patrick Franzen, Ambassador of Switzerland to Georgia, Trend reports citing commersant.ge.

Swiss products in Georgia will also enjoy similar protection.

Per the agreement signed on September 1, Georgian wines from Kakheti, Sulguni cheese and Borjomi mineral water will be protected in Switzerland.

In addition, brands as Tête de Moine, Gruyère, Swiss chocolate and Swiss watches will be protected in Georgia. The Swiss cross, the word Switzerland and the names of Swiss cantons will also be protected.

"Geographical indications and appellations of origins are an important marketing tools for Swiss quality products, also in the export sector,” says Patric Franzen, the Swiss ambassador in Georgia.

He added that the agreement between Georgia and Switzerland protects products better than international law, and hence contributes to maintaining the reputation of Swiss quality products over the long term.
