Iran to save $1.1B annually by increasing rice production

Iran will save $1.1 billion annually by increasing rice production, Iranian Deputy Minister of Agriculture Abbas Keshavarz said, Trend reports via the ministry’s website.

Keshavarz noted that Iran’s annual consumption of rice is 3.2 million tons.

Iran’s rice production has reached 2.9 million tons this sowing year, the deputy minister said.

Keshavarz noted that rice production increased by 42 percent.

Regarding wheat production, the deputy minister said that 14 million tons of wheat were harvested in Iran this sowing year. However, Iran’s annual consumption is 11.5 million tons, Keshavarz added.

Rapeseed production increased from 60,000 tons to 360,000 tons last sowing year, the deputy minister said, predicting that more than 750,000 tons of rapeseed will be harvested this sowing year.

“Agricultural products worth $6.5 billion were exported last Iranian year (March 21, 2018 - March 21, 2019),” Keshavarz noted.

The deputy minister said that the exported products were mainly pistachios, apples, grapes, dates and vegetables.
