Container shipments by Georgian Railways up by 34%

BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 11

By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:

JSC Georgian Railways delivered 64,000 cargo containers (TEU) over the 10 months of 2019, which is a record figure, Trend reports citing Georgian media.

From January through October 2019, the number of containers increased by 34 percent compared to the same period in 2018. The speed of the container traffic doubled since 2016, the report said.

Without crude oil, the total volume of cargo transported by the Georgian Railways reached 8.57 million tons, which is 7 percent more than in 2018. At the same time, this indicator is 29 percent lower than in 2014.

The cargo transportation statistics show that the composition of goods passing through the transport corridor of Georgia is gradually changing. If in the past, the bulk of the cargo included crude oil, ores, wheat and other goods, currently, the railway transports more processed products.

According to the information, JSC Georgian Railways had the largest load in October, when the total cargo turnover exceeded 1 million tons. In October 2018, the supply volume amounted to 825,000 tons.
