Turkmenistan unveils plan for silkworm cocoon production volumes

ASHGABAT, Turkmenistan, Feb. 18

By Huseyn Hasanov – Trend:

Turkmenistan plans to produce 2,100 tons of raw silkworm cocoons in 2020, Trend reports referring to the presidential decree.

In particular, it is planned to produce 155 tons in Ahal province, 25 tons - Balkan province, 500 tons - Dashoguz province, 1,010 tons - Lebap province, 410 tons - Mary province.

The Turkmen Ministry of Agriculture and Environment Protection has been charged with organizing the production of cocoons.

Sericulture may become one of the key sectors of the local agricultural industry and may cover the entire country except the western regions. At the same time, more than half of cocoons accounts for Lebap province.

Among the leading silk producing enterprises are Ashgabat silk factory and Turkmenabat Silk Production Association.

Silk "Keteni" homespun fabric is popular in Turkmenistan. According to the experts, since ancient times, Turkmen people have been successfully engaged in sericulture. The homespun fabric was in great demand due to its strength, as well as the brightness and beauty of the pattern.

Famous museums in Egypt, UK, and the US store samples of ancient silk fabrics made in the ancient Turkmen city of Merv.
