By Tamilla Mammadova – Trend:

Prior to the spread of coronavirus infection in the world, an increase in tourists from the United States to Georgia was recorded in 2019, Trend reports citing a report from the Center for Analysis and Prediction of Tbilisi State University.

According to the data, the US tourists spend the most money in Georgia. On average, the US tourists spent about 4,115 lari ($1,304) per person in Georgia.

In 2019, the US visitors spent over190 million lari ($60.2 million) in Georgia, which is about 2.2 percent of Georgia’s total tourism income.

Meanwhile, in 2019 negotiations between Georgia and the United States began on the appointment of direct flights. Negotiations were conducted with the American Delta Airlines and United Airlines.

In case of successful completion of these negotiations, the flow of tourists between the United States and Georgia will increase significantly, and this will also allow the use of Georgian airspace as a transit corridor, which will be very attractive for US airlines, the report said.

In addition, the United States plays a significant role in the implementation of strategic projects in Georgia.

With the active support of the United States, it is planned to launch new projects through Georgia, in particular, the Trans-Caspian gas pipeline and the White Stream. With the help of these projects, Georgia is becoming closer to acquiring the functions of an international hub, said the center.

Furthermore, the Georgian economy is heavily dependent on remittances carried out by emigrants from different countries. In this regard, the United States ranks fifth in terms of remittances to Georgia.

In 2019, the volume of money transfers made from the United States to Georgia amounted to $178 million. This is 10 percent of the total remittances in Georgia.
