Iran produces about 850,000-860,000 tons of red meat a year, said Managing Director of Livestock Affairs Support Company Hassan Abbasi Maroufan, Trend reports citing Ministry of Agriculture Jihad.
According to Abbasi Maroufan, Iran consumes about 900,000 tons of red meat a year, and this means that the country has to import 40,000-50,000 tons of red meat a year.
Abbasi Maroufan added that producers have promised to fully supply red meat in the country in the current Iranian year (began March 20, 2020). In this case, Iran will not need to rely on the product import.
"Our company has held discussions with manufacturers on this issue. In the first stage, it is planned to purchase 10,000 tons of beef and 3,000 tons of mutton for storage," he said.
The current price of 1 kg of beef in Iran is 850,000-900,000 rials (about $20- $21), and the price of 1 kg of mutton is 1.3-1.4 million rials (about $30- $33).
