Iran to boost raw silk cocoon production

BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 3

Iran will produce 1,650 tons of raw silk cocoon in the current Iranian year (starting from March 20, 2020), said Adeel Sarvizargar, Head of the National Sericulture Development Center of Iran, Trend reports citing the Ministry of Agriculture Jihad.

According to Sarvizargar, this is an increase of 20 percent compared to last Iranian year (from March 21, 2019 to March 20, 2020).

Sarvizargar added that it is planned to provide 47,000 eggs to farmers in 31 provinces of Iran to provide them with silkworm eggs. Farmers in nine provinces have been provided with silkworm eggs. This work continues in 16 provinces, and in the remaining provinces this work will begin in a few days.

The director said that this year, the purchase price of raw silk cocoon from farmers has increased by 56 percent.

Last year, raw silk cocoon production in Iran exceeded 1,380 tons.

A number of products, including wheat, rice, tea, sugar beet, raw silk cocoon and others, are purchased under guaranteed conditions in Iran. About 330,000 rials (about $7.85) has been set for the purchase of 1 kg of raw silk cocoon from farmers this year.
