BAKU, Azerbaijan, May 18
By Fidan Babayeva – Trend:
As part of the FAO-Azerbaijan Partnership Programme launched in 2019, the implementation of six large projects in the field of ecology and natural resources has successfully been continuing, Melek Chakmak, Head of the FAO Partnership and Liaison Office in Azerbaijan, told Trend.
The Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations (UN) that leads international efforts to defeat hunger.
The head of the office said that within the FAO-Azerbaijan Partnership Programme, signed in 2016 and designed for the period until the end of 2020, the implementation of projects will continue.
“Our office is presently implementing various projects in three main programs. The natural resources management program related to forestry, climate change and fisheries has given the successful results,” she said.
Chakmak noted that the FAO supports the ongoing reforms of Azerbaijan's Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources, as well as work on development of forest re-accounting and the preparation of forest management plans at the expense of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) and trilateral cooperation between the FAO, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs of Turkey and the Azerbaijani Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources.
“On the other hand, in 2019, we started implementing two large projects funded by the EU, the main purpose of which is the formation of a system of agricultural consulting services in the country, as well as ensuring sustainable production of local products,” the head of the office said.
Chakmak added that the FAO also supports Azerbaijan in achieving priorities within the Sustainable Development Goals.
In November 2016, the FAO and the Azerbaijani government signed the Partnership Program for 2016-2020.
Azerbaijan has been a member of the FAO since 1995. The FAO Partnership and Liaison Office in Azerbaijan has been operating since 2007.
