Specialists in the worm farming of Azerbaijan’s Barda district have grown and handed over to the centers for processing 1,000 boxes of silkworm cocoon with a weight of 19 kilograms, Trend reports with reference to the Azerbaijan Industrial Corporation.

“The specialists in this field have set themselves the goal of increasing silkworm production in 2020. It is expected that over 40 tons of cocoons will be collected in Barda district this year,” said the report.

“The supply of cocoons to processing centers continues. Azeripek LLC representatives have already received 22.8 tons of products grown by specialists in rearing silkworms,” the corporation noted.

“Despite the fact that in the early 1990s, the production of silkworms in Barda district was significantly reduced, in 2016 restoration began. In order to increase the feed base of the silkworm in 2016-2019, over 400,000 mulberry trees were planted in the district. In 2016, 4.5 tons of silkworm cocoons were produced, in 2017 - 12.5 tons, in 2018 - 24.5 tons, in 2019 - 36.6 tons,” the report said.

Azeripek LLC purchases a kilogram of raw cocoon from silkworm breeders for 4 manat ($2.3), and the state pays them subsidies in the amount of 5 manat ($2.9) for each kilogram.
